About Dr. Kara Martin
Welcome to Terrapin World! I’m Dr. Kara Martin — biologist, conservationist, and lifelong terrapin enthusiast. With over 15 years of hands-on research and fieldwork, my mission is to bridge the gap between science and stewardship when it comes to these incredible reptiles.
A Lifelong Passion for Terrapins
My fascination with terrapins began in coastal marshes as a child, where I first encountered the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin). That early spark led me to pursue a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, with a focus on wetland ecosystems and reptile behavior. Today, I study terrapin health, habitat use, and conservation strategies, while raising several species in carefully maintained habitats.
What is Terrapin World?
Terrapin World is a space where science meets everyday care. Here, I share:
- Field notes from my research and restoration projects
- Best practices for responsible terrapin keeping
- Deep dives into behavior, physiology, and species diversity
- Conservation insights for educators, hobbyists, and researchers alike
Whether you’re a fellow biologist, a turtle keeper, or just terrapin-curious, you’re welcome here.
My Approach
I believe in combining rigorous science with practical understanding. That means I prioritize evidence-based care, sustainable habitat management, and public education. I also work with conservation partners to support wild populations through habitat restoration and community science.
